Milan-Fashion Capital of The World

Milan is a city in the north of Italy. The city rests in the Lombardy plains and it is home to a population of 1,308,500 inhabitants. It is thought that the city was first settled by the Celts around 600BC. Milan was then captured by the Romans around 222BC and by the 4th century the city was the capital of the Western Roman Empire. In the 11th century, the city was granted semi-independence by the Romans, but in ensuing years Milan faced invasions by France and Austria. The city regained independence in 1859, but it became a stronghold of the German army during World War II.

During this time, Milan suffered extreme bombing and large portions of the city were destroyed. Since the war ended in Italy on April 25th 1945, the city has been rebuilt as a stylish and welcoming metropolis.

Despite Allied bombing, the city does boast some stunning architectural treasures. The Duomo Cathedral was built in a late-Gothic style and boasts 1,000 statues and beautiful views from its spire. Equally impressive is the Santa Maria delle Grazie Church, which is also home to Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘Last Supper’. (more…)

Fall Fashion Trends for Women – How to Dress for Success with the Latest Fall Fashions Trends

The fall fashion trends are in. What are the hottest looks for fall? From Gucci to Prada, there are bizarre shaggy coats, and color-blocked toeless socks; perilously low-cut white tuxedo jackets and four-inch-high patent leather oxford pumps. And don’t forget the impractical shade of sky blue for coats, bags and furs, and multi-colored shoes that look like building-block toys.

Women have it tough. The latest styles on the runway usually don’t translate well to the boardroom or the cubicle, and we risk looking unprofessional. If our image doesn’t inspire confidence and credibility, we risk not getting the promotion we deserve, or the client or contract we want.

So how do we interpret the current trends without becoming a fashion victim? Here are some tips that take you from the runway to the cubical.

Dress for your industry. If you are in advertising, the fashion industry, or a business where your style is noticed, you are more open to adapting the trends to your personal style. If you are in a conservative industry such as financial services or healthcare, you need to adapt the styles to your office. Remember that business is still conservative.

Take your cues from above. Look at what your boss or manager are wearing. Look at what the men in your office are wearing. Can you picture them wearing plaid knickers or red toeless socks? If you are serious about your career, you need to dress for the workplace, not for the runway. (more…)

Beauty Forecast – Your Inside Look at Berlin Fashion Week Spring 2009 Make-up Trends

Presenting a complete and total reflection of Spring 2009 is a heavy undertaking for any designer. Of course, runway shows provide designers with a platform to exhibit their creativity in high-end garment production and craftsmanship, but in order for a collection to standout, the designer must deliver a full, head-to-toe, complete package look. This includes great styling, accessory coordination, stunning shoes, hair and, last but not least, make-up artistry.

The model must exude the inspiration of the designers’ collection and captivate the audience, fashion editors, buyers and journalist alike, which sets expectations relatively high considering a runway show lasts only 5 minutes and takes from 6 months up to a year for a designer to prepare.

Setting the make-up palette and color scheme just right is critical for any designer because it sets the tone for what is to come. The runways at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin rocked with various makeup trends from the naturally conventional to the bedazzling beautiful. Here we present the most striking runway looks of the season that you may want to emulate and make your own.

There is no question that Slavna Martinovic designs for the chameleon woman, who can transform her beauty to bewitch and enchant all eyes casted on her. This season Martinovic casted a spell on the runway that was bold and mysterious. Fiery red lips of power combined with a smoky intoxicating eye looked unusually exotic and feminine. The use of jewels to outline and define the eye shape was very Gipsy meets Far East.

Designer Vivian Westwood caused chaos on the runway as she unveiled her Anglomania Spring collection. The high spirited collection was targeted towards a younger, more casual customer. The models wore makeup that was realistic yet sexy. They featured simple eyes, balanced skin tones and the timeless red lips that complemented the bold colorful collection. The makeup itself generated an extra level of excitement on the runway.

It was a manifestation of the 1920s femme fatal at LAC ET MEL’s Spring ’09 runway show, where make-up artists contoured the lips to a baby doll pout reminiscent of famed American pin-up girls like Betty Grable, Greta Garbo and Clara Bow. The single most pervading beauty trend at Berlin Fashion Week was the classic yet always contemporary red lip. (more…)

Coach in the World of Fashion

The Coach brand, familiar isn’t it? You might have encountered the brand name in various boutiques, shops and malls. Actually, it has been around for a while, for more than 60 years in fact. The brand had its humble beginnings in a small Manhattan loft way back in 1941. The now popular trademark started from a small family-run business.

The very first products that carried the brand name were leather handbags crafted by skilled hands and from high quality leather. Since then, their products have been synonymous to quality and beauty.

They continue to exhibit excellent workmanship until this day. The brand name can now be seen, not only in handbags, but also in various women accessories such as gloves, key rings, wallets, sunglasses, leather cases, wristlets, watches, even umbrellas, bracelets, silk scarves and floppy hats. Trough the years, the brand has also branched out to the fashionable men who want quality designer travel bags and briefcases, messenger bags, totes, watches, belts and ties.

Moreover, you can find the brand on a complete line of women leather shoes, which due to the rock solid reputation that the brand had built, has been quite successful in the fashion world this past years. This was totally different from a few years ago. Even though the brand has become famous for quality leather bags, they were not able to capture a wider market due to the fact that their products only appeal to a minute group of conservatives.

Their black and brown leather bags and shoes were never that popular to teens, hipsters and yuppies. They needed a fresh and younger look to sell. When finally they decided to expand their product lines, they started integrating the newest craze and trendiest styles in fashion into their designs. Slowly they built up their catalogues until they reached the level of diversity they have now. (more…)
