Fashion Design Schools Send You to Your Destination and Beyond

Carrie Cochran, former student of fashion design schools student turned fashion designer to the stars (and non-celebrities), moves on to the next phase of her fashion design career.

What’s Carrie’s next step after attending one of the many reputable fashion design schools? She started a fashion design business called Karma Kultura.

While her motivation for looking into fashion design schools was her love for garments and crafts, Carrie says her inspiration for starting the company was her clients. “I would make custom stage garments all the time and wanted to offer unique accessories to add to my clients’ wardrobes.”

With accessories and garments that are very unconventional, Carrie explains how she creates these pieces. “I would look for things around the house — junk – and put it together into interesting designs in the form of wallet chains, bracelets, belts, guitar straps, necklaces, cuffs, and earrings,” she explains.

Sounds weird, huh? But believe it or not, the funky pieces are worn by fashionistas and celebrities alike nationwide. And it’s not like Carrie is just some ordinary crafty diva — she’s a crafty diva, educated at one of the finest fashion design schools, the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. A fashion design career wasn’t just handed to her — she worked hard to get her degree from one of many reputable fashion design schools in the nation.

“I am proud to say I am a fashion design college graduate, and I have a degree in something I love. With many people wanting to work in fashion — from stylists to designers, even a public relations — a degree can give you an advantage,” she explains. “Going to fashion designs school will show that you have extensive knowledge, skills, and experience in the industry that has better prepared you to enter the job market.” At fashion design schools, Carrie and other students learn about many software programs used in the fashion industry such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator, as well as electronic pattern systems.

Once completing a degree from one of many fashion design schools, expect to work in various jobs within the fashion design industry like Carrie did. During the process, she networked and made a name for herself, which eventually landed her celebrity clients like Ricky Martin and Serena Williams.

“My clients loved the [offbeat] pieces and since they were all one-of-a-kind, it made them feel even more special,” says the proud business owner.

Now what? With Carrie’s fashion design career in full swing, she’s contemplating her next move. She’s already absorbed knowledge from fashion design schools, which led to her designing and collaborating with high-profile celebs. Now with her design business underway, who knows what we’ll see next from the creative paragon. Maybe Carrie will go to fashion design graduate school? Who knows? The sky’s the limit for the design sensation!

Davydenko Stunned In Malaysia, Wozniacki Wins In Tokyo

Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (AHN) – Second-seeded and defending champion Nikolay Davydenko was derailed by fellow Russian Igor Andreev Wednesday in the second-round of the Malaysian Open at Putra Stadium in Kuala Lumpur.

Davydenko, recipient of a bye in the first round, overcame a tentative start to force a decider, but failed to sustain against Andreev, 7-6 (7-5) 5-7 6-3.

It marked the first victory after three straight losses for the Russian qualifier Andreev, who won his first meeting with Davydenko in 2003 in Bucharest.

In the quarters, Andreev will face fellow qualifier Milos Roanic, who also posted an upset Wednesday when he toppled No. 7th seed Sergiy Stakhovsky, 6-7 (8), 7-6 (9), 6-3.

Other second-round winners were Mikhail Youzhny, seeded fourth, and sixth seeded Marcos Baghdatis. Youzhny and Baghdatis will square off in Friday’s quarters.

In Wednesday’s first round matches, fifth-seeded David Ferrer plastered Aussie Bernard Tomie in 6-3, 6-4 fashion, while Edouard Roger-Vasselin and Denis Istomin also punched second-round tickets after disposing their opponents.

In Bangkok, Thailand, third-seeded French Open semifinalist Jurgen Melzer of Austria and Latvian Ernests Gulbis, seeded four, highlighted second-round winners Wednesday at the Thailand Open.

Melzer, a semifinalist last year, reached his 10th quarterfinal of the year following a 6-3, 6-4 dismantling of Israeli Dudi Sela, while Gulbis overcome a tough test by German veteran Rainer Schuettler, 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (4-7), 6-4.

In Friday’s quarterfinals, Melzer will battle No. 7 seeded Serbian Viktor Troicki or Jarkko Nieminen of Finland.

Gulbis will play Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain, a second-round conqueror of Frenchman Florent Serra.

Also in Day 3, Daniel Brands posted a second-round upset over sixth-seeded Thiemo De Bakker 7-6 (7-2), 1-6, 7-6 (9-7), while Benjamin Becker dumped Mischa Zverev in their opening round clash.

Meanwhile, top-ranked Spaniard Rafael Nadal will debut at the Bangkok event Thursday. He will be tested by Belgian qualifier Ruben Bemelmans.

The Spanish superstar, who got a first-round bye, arrived in Thailand last Tuesday and enjoyed a week-long holiday in Hua Hin, while practicing in the seaside resort town.

The 24-year-old Nadal, the seventh man to win all Grand Slam titles after ruling the recent US Open, rescheduled a meeting with the Premier, citing the need to practice.

Nadal missed the Thailand Open staged in the past two years due to injuries.

In Tokyo, Japan, top-seeded Dane Caroline Wozniacki and second-seeded Vera Zvonareva of Russia led Wednesday’s second round winners at the Toray Pan Pacific Open.

Wozniacki continued her mastery of 16th-seeded Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-1, 6-2 to reach the quarterfinal of the $2 million Tokyo event.

It marked the fifth straight time, and the third time this year, that Wozniacki has dominated Pavlyuchenkova.

Wozniacki’s next challenger will be sixth-seeded Pole Agnieszka Radwanska, who eliminated German Andrea Petkovic in straight sets Wednesday.

Zvonerava also had an easy time against Roberta Vinci, demolishing the Italian qualifier, 6-4, 6-0. Zvonareva, a two-time 2010 Grand Slam finalist, will play seventh-seeded fellow Russian Elena Dementieva in the next stage.

Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi also advanced after toppling third-seeded 2009 Pan Pacific Open runner-up Jelena Jankovic, 6-4, 6-4.

The rising Kanepi, who reached the quarterfinals at the US Open and Wimbledon this past summer, will collide with fifth-seeded French Open champion Francesca Schiavone, who ended an impressive run by local favorite Kimiko Date Krumm.

Krumm, who celebrated her 40th birthday Tuesday with a second-round victory over Daniela Hantuchova, wilted against Schiavonne’s thundering groundstrokes en route to a 6-3, 6-3 setback.

Krumm, who dominated the Tokyo tournament in 1995, stunned defending champion Maria Sharapova in the opening round.

Other second-round winners were No. 8th seed Victoria Azarenka and Coco Vandeweghe. Azarenka and Vandeweghe will meet in the quarterfinals.

Forever Autumn: The Rise Of Feminine Minimalism In Women’s Fashion

The fashion world is a strange place. Weeks before many of us have bought what we imagine we’ll be wearing for the summer wardrobe, the projections for autumn 2010 are already out from the oracle of the high street fashion directors, a move prompting this article – well, what else is there to do when the moguls are so loose-lipped? A few months back we did an article running parallel with the opening weeks of London Fashion Week on feminine minimalism – a leading style that seemed to have been jostled out of the pecking order by the more spring and summer relevant Global Traveller look, though the former had been set to be the darling of women’s fashion 2010. That remains to be seen; it has simply taken another season for those ideas to come to fashion fruition. Autumn 2010 is set to see the emergence of the high street interpretation of this new angular and stripped-down look, with major outlets openly linking themselves to the Phoebe Philo-inspired doctrine. So it sounds a little theoretical, but what does feminine minimalism entail, or, how do we wear it? At this early stage, the focus seems to be on two things; plain structural shape and clean lines throughout. Tunic-like tops and dresses are a favourite so far, with a contrasting colour for the fitted trousers or angular skirt for the bottoms. We’re talking camel coats, most definitely, and reports from the Guardian are championing the sheepskin jacket as possibly the most integral variant. For trousers, there’s a reported amount of re-jigging of shapes and cuts in the high street brands, each looking for a way to encapsulate the minimalist reliance upon silhouette in the best degree. Kick flares and boot cut trousers with severe creases are likely to go down well with this look. For colour we’re talking a glaucous palette range of bluish greys, café latte browns and as little ornamentation as possible. It seems altogether quite predictable that a swing in the opposite direction from colour prints and floral mayhem would somehow ensue, but there is a serious fashion intent behind the high street incarnation of feminine minimalism. Though a term coined by some of the biggest designer names in the fashion world, it is still a malleable idea, and we are likely to see the high street taking considerable risks in inventing the look over again in order to secure individuality. If you’re hunting down the components of this look as we speak, keep an eye out for almost clinically-pure dresses, with ornamentation only in the form of winged or flange detailing; tan shoes are a must for one of no more than three core colours. With coats and jackets think structure, clean lines, and rather brutally-plain materials, for a boxy kind of feel.

Armani To Design Lady Gaga’s Costumes For Upcoming Tour

Stephanie Sims – AHN Entertainment Reporter

New York, NY, United States (AHN) – Lady Gaga and Giorgio Armani have formed a multimillion dollar partnership that will involve the legendary designer making the costumes for the leg of the singer’s tour starting in December.

The iconic, 76-year-old Italian fashion designer did something unusual and dressed Lady Gaga, known for her adventurism in fashion, in a crystal-encrusted silver hoop dress with orbiting rings for the Grammy Awards. He then started designing costumes for her videos for her – the bondage-style black leather costumes in the racy “Alejandro” video were Armani – and must have evolved into the partnership for Gaga’s tour costumes.

Armani seems to be the designer of Gaga’s choice as of late; he designed the black rubberized dress with spikes sticking out which the singer wore to the MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles more recently.

Armani’s designing deal with the 24-year-old pop star is reportedly an effort by Armani to rejuvenate his business.

“A huge company like Giorgio Armani has the duty to always be alert to trends and what appeals to young people,” Roberta Armani, Armani’s niece and head of VIP relations, told the Wall Street Journal. “It helped to see how the world is through Lady Gaga, the way she uses Facebook and Twitter.”

Although there is still very little information on what the pair’s collaboration will involve, Gaga is the first star that Armani has designed a specific gown for. Celebrities who have previously worn his label have chosen from existing collections.

“It wouldn’t be possible to give Gaga a look from the collection because she wears pieces of art. It’s theatrical,” Roberta said.
