Philadelphia, PA, United States (AHN) – It’s never too late for a comeback for the Phightin’ Philadelphia Phillies
When the Phillies roared back with a four-run ninth for a 7-6 win capped by rightfielder Jayson Werth’s two-run homer over the Washington Nationals Sunday afternoon, they made some history.
It was the fourth time the Phillies won a game in which they trailed by at least three runs in the ninth inning. They are the first team to accomplish such a feat since the Cleveland Indians of 1979.
“We just never give up,” Werth said. “The one thing that’s constant about this team the past three seasons is that whenever we’re down, we believe that we can come back. Look at the game earlier in the year when we played against the (San Francisco) Giants.”
The Phillies were behind 4-1 and down to their last strike when Werth doubled off the right field line with the bases loaded against Giants sensational closer Brian Wilson. Werth’s double tied the game, which the Phillies went on to win.
“We hung in there during that game. We’ve done it then and during the playoffs,” Werth added.
During game four of the 2009 NLDS against the Colorado Rockies, the Phillies were down by two in the ninth inning in chilly Denver but they bounced back to win courtesy of an RBI single by Werth.
“We won the series because of that comeback,” Werth said. “We didn’t want to go back to Philadelphia and face the Rockies in a winner take all situation. We made it to the next round.”
During the next round, the Phillies were down to their last strike in game four of the NLCS. Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins doubled off the Dodgers dominant closer Jonathan Broxton to drive in two runs to win the game in dramatic fashion.
The Phillies took the series the following night.
“That just tells you a lot about our team,” centerfielder Shane Victorino said. “We’re always trying to battle back and win. You’re foolish if you count us out.”
There have been times during the 2010 campaign when it looked as if the Phillies might cave. But each time the team appeared as if it might buckle, the Phillies came back.
When Roy Halladay lost to the New York Yankees in the Bronx in June, the team appeared unable to shake a funk.
With Jamie Moyer and Kyle Kendrick slated to finish off the series, the Phillies appeared to be in trouble but they won the next two games.
After suffering their first four game sweep at Citizens Bank Park in August at the hands of the woebegone Houston Astros, the Phillies looked like they might stumble on a West Coast trip that appeared daunting on paper.
However, the Phillies went 6-1 against the San Diego Padres, Los Angeles Dodgers and Colorado Rockies.
“You can’t win them all,” Victorino said. “That’s baseball. We had some rough patches during this season. But it’s a long season. You’re going to go through some bad stretches but this team knows that it will get it together and win. We know what we can do. That’s why we never give up.”
