El Segundo, CA, United States (AHN) – She has been a ballerina and a doctor. She has been a flight attendant and a fashion icon. In 2009, she celebrated her 50th birthday. And in 2011, Barbie got tattooed.

The iconic American doll manufactured by Mattel has received a complete makeover. The limited edition $50 Barbie doll has been given a pink bob haircut with trendy bangs, leopard print leggings and has floral and Magna cartoon-style motifs inked across her left arm, neck and chest.

Many have voiced complaints about the tattooed Barbie, saying it sends the message to children that tattoos are cool and okay. Others say it makes Barbie more human and that the tattoos are more realistic than her disproportionate body measurements.

Mattel has no plans to bow to public pressure. The company said in a statement that it has no intention to discontinue the doll, adding that “the doll gives girls a chance to express themselves and be creative.”
