Want a stained T-shirt with that Starbucks latte?

Diane Alter – AHN News Reporter

Seattle, WA, United States (AHN) – Don’t cry over spilled coffee. It appears to be the newest trend.

In celebration of its 40th year, international coffee chain and coffee house Starbucks is selling $85 coffee stained T-shirts.

Starbucks has partnered with fashion designers Alexander Wang, Sophie Theallet and Billy Reed to release an exclusive line of T-Shirts inspired by the coffee giant featuring giant coffee stains.

Wang told InStyle Magazine that his inspiration was “what everyone tries to avoid–spilled coffee on a T-shirt.” Wang’s stylish spill design also features the signature Starbucks’ mermaid faintly revealed within the fake stain.

The $85 T-shirts debuted late last week at select locations of upscale department store Nordstrom. They can also be purchased online at StarbucksStore.com

Or you could save yourself some money and simply buy a Venti Americano and spill it on yourself.

Orlando tops travel website’s worst dressed cities

Vittorio Hernandez – AHN News

Orlando, FL, United States (AHN) – American and Canadian cities were in the 10 top worst dressed cities list compiled by MSN Travel. On top of the list is Orlando, Florida, where Disney World is located.

Orlando topped the list because of the prevalence of soccer moms with bad haircuts, jean shorts and Gap T-shirts, fathers with big bellies showing in overhanging shirts and wearing Teva sandals, and children in dirty clothes. Song opined that cartoon character Minnie Mouse is the best-dressed woman in Orlando with her red-and-white polka dot dress.

Author Vivian Song, who made the list, said she was inspired by a GQ magazine article that ranked the worst-dressed cities in the U.S. She insisted that the website does not consider itself the fashion police, but sloppiness and tastelessness needs to be cited.

Other American cities on the list were: Maui (3rd), Boston (5th), Seattle (6th), San Francisco and Silicon Valley (7th), Pittsburg (9th) and Jersey Shore (10th).

Two Canadian cities were on the roster – Vancouver in third place and Ottawa in eighth – and one Asian city, Harajuku, Japan, which ranked fourth.

In the case of the Canadian cities, Song placed Vancouver on the list because it was where yoga pants originated, while Ottawa was chided because its residents wear mostly suits and ties and do not attempt to be different.

Song admitted she owns a fair number of yoga pants because they are comfortable, but she pointed out the outfit is not the best option for women with full hips and thighs.

In the case of fourth placer Harajuku, Song acknowledged that many of the world’s hottest fashion designers were inspired by the street style worn by the majority of Japanese youth in the city, but with everyone trying to look so different, they all end up looking alike.

New cash transfer program to reach most vulnerable communities

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (IRIN) – In an effort to help some of the most vulnerable people in one of Ethiopia’s most food insecure regions, the government of Tigray has launched a pilot scheme to transfer cash to those least able to earn money for themselves. If successful, it could be adopted country-wide.

The scheme follows a series of interventions by the local government designed to improve food security among a fast-growing, predominantly rural population. According to a recent report published by the journal Ecology and Society, recent initiatives “such as water harvesting schemes, employment generation schemes, and promotion of technology adoption significantly contribute to a higher likelihood of household food security status” in Tigray.

According to the country’s Central Statistics Office, the region, whose population is around 4.5 million has more than 217,000 orphans and 69,000 people with disabilities, as well as 119,000 destitute elders and 6,734 child-headed households

A document from the Labor Bureau explains that “the needs of this vulnerable segment of the population cannot be fully addressed with the current limited government and donor support.”

Among the beneficiaries of the pilot is Tigisti Adhano, 38, a widow living in Hintalo-Wejerat.

“I have three children, all of them still in school. With the growing problem at home, I was struggling to keep them there,” she said. “But now I don’t think I should ever worry about that,” she said, referring to a new social protection initiative from which she is benefiting.

The Social Cash Transfer Pilot Program aims to benefit “extremely poor and at the same time labor-constrained” families, according to the region’s Bureau of Labor and Social Affairs.

In addition, the program aims at “increasing school enrollment and attendance and improving health and nutrition of children living in the target group”.

Due to the effects of persistent drought, past wars, HIV/AIDS and poverty, along with the global food price hikes, the number of vulnerable people such as Tigisti and her children is high.

The project aims to set up social protection mechanisms for vulnerable groups and transfers a small amount of resources to them and assesses the impact of these transfers on their lives. It operates through Community Care Coalitions (CCCs).

The bureau is piloting a social protection minimum package in two woredas (districts), Abiadi and Hintalo-Wajirat (with a population of 17,000 and 152,000 respectively).

Across both woredas, a total of about 3,300 households will receive one or a combination of instruments, consisting of social pensions, basic household poverty grant, disability grant and child support grant. The project began on 12 August.

The grants range from 80 to 160 birr or US$4.80-$9.70 per month per household, depending on specific composition, and the project is expected to cost a total $2.3 million to March 2014.

Targeting school enrollment

Douglas Webb, one of the designers of the project, from the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) said the program was different from existing safety net initiatives “as it is designed to benefit those vulnerable people that can’t work or who shouldn’t be working, like under-aged children”.

The indicators in other African countries show that such programs “tend to improve school enrollment, [and] nutritional and health status of this particular community”, he said.

“This is an important step to provide a social protection safety net for vulnerable population groups in a manner that is affordable, community-based and which limits dependency,” said UNICEF representative to Ethiopia, Ted Chaiban.

He said it would help to provide an “important lesson that can be brought into policy dialog around how Ethiopia can build on existing social protection strictures”.

The Federal Minister of Social and Labor Affairs, Abdulfetah Abdulahi, said the program would be referred to for a new social protection policy being drawn up. “Based on its result, we will use it intensively throughout the country,” said the minister.

New cash transfer program to reach vulnerable communities

Addis-Ababa, Ethiopia (IRIN) – Tigisti Adhano, 38, is a mother of three living in Hintalo-Wejerat, in Tigray Regional State of Ethiopia, where many residents are vulnerable.

When her husband passed away a while ago, she had no one to turn to for help – until now.

“I have three children, all of them still in school. With the growing problem at home, I was struggling to keep them there,” she said. “But now I don’t think I should ever worry about that,” she said, referring to a new social protection initiative from which she is benefiting.

Miriam Cecilia Debuts Fall 2011 Collection In Chicago

Stephanie Sims – Celebrity News Service Reporter

Chicago, IL, United States (AHN Entertainment) – Designer of Miriam Cecilia, Miriam Cecilia Carlson, debuted an earthy yet glamorous fall 2011 collection at the 900 Shops on Chicago’s Michigan Avenue. Everyone in attendance — women and men — seemed equally impressed.

Miriam Cecilia models posed in ready-to-wear pieces, each with their own special embellishment — for example, a fur-trimmed cape, cowl-necked dresses and fur-shouldered jackets — as well as more elaborate pieces, including couture gowns that looked as light as air.

Each piece by the designer is hand-sewn, and their elegant structure portrayed the collection’s theme, “Harvest Moon”; inspired by spontaneous moments in nature and the transitional function between vast landscapes and the bustling city, Carlson’s designs perfectly fit the nature lover who lives in the city.

Also included in the fashion show was the designer’s submission to this year’s Oscars Designer Challenge 2011, a contest put on by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The contest invited the public to vote which of the dresses entered by aspiring fashion designers should be worn by one of the awards escorts during the 83rd Academy Awards on February 27.

Though Carlson didn’t win the challenge (fellow Chicago designer Borris Powell won), but her design entry was and is still gorgeous: a beautifully draped long gown with an innovative play on a racerback — large pieces of mica form the racerback portion of the dress, and also frame the neckline of the light, peach-colored fabric.

Kanye West turned away at Paris Fashion Week shows

Anne Lu – Celebrity News Service Contributor

Paris, France (CNS) – Kanye West may love fashion, but fashion isn’t exactly enamored of him. The rap superstar was reportedly turned away by some designers at the Paris Fashion Week after turning up uninvited.

Kanye was able to attend high fashion labels Valentino, Givenchy, and Vivienne Westwood this week, but he was not invited to Alexander McQueen, Balmain, and Louis Vuitton, according to Page Six. But the outspoken artist tried to defy organizers and appeared with his entourage at the show.

Last Thursday, he tried to get into the Le Grand Hoel to see the Balmain runway show, but he was denied entry so he snuck off to another part of the hotel. He also tried to get into the McQueen show on Tuesday, showing up without warning.

Balmain and McQueen show organizer KCD told Page Six, “Mr. West requested to attend and we let him know we would not be able to accommodate him. He chose to come to the door anyway and we kindly let him know we could not accommodate him.

Apparently some organizers are tired of uninvited celebrities showing up to fashion events and expecting VIP treatment.

A KCD rep further explained, “Kanye has been a welcome guest at several events that KCD has managed over the years. Several designers chose to have smaller shows this season and therefore chose to not invite celebs in order to accommodate press and buyers.”
