Gaudy Christmas sweaters making fashion comeback

Diane Alter – AHN News Reporter

New York, NY, United States (AHN) – Say it isn’t so. Some retailers are reporting that gaudy Christmas sweaters are back in vogue.

Usually regarded as a fashion faux pas, those traditional sweaters sporting reindeer with cotton ball noses, snowflakes with glitter and pictures of a jolly Santa Claus with real jingling sleigh bells are a trend among fashionistas this season and a popular theme for holiday sweaters.

It appears those chichi sweaters, proudly worn by your grandmother, are all the rage at holiday parties.

Store owners report they can’t keep them in stock and the cheery numbers have garnered a new-found respect.

Some people say the sweaters help them get in the holiday spirit. Others maintain that if they get one it better include a gift receipt.

Barbie gets inked in fashion makeover

Diane Alter – AHN News Reporter

El Segundo, CA, United States (AHN) – She has been a ballerina and a doctor. She has been a flight attendant and a fashion icon. In 2009, she celebrated her 50th birthday. And in 2011, Barbie got tattooed.

The iconic American doll manufactured by Mattel has received a complete makeover. The limited edition $50 Barbie doll has been given a pink bob haircut with trendy bangs, leopard print leggings and has floral and Magna cartoon-style motifs inked across her left arm, neck and chest.

Many have voiced complaints about the tattooed Barbie, saying it sends the message to children that tattoos are cool and okay. Others say it makes Barbie more human and that the tattoos are more realistic than her disproportionate body measurements.

Mattel has no plans to bow to public pressure. The company said in a statement that it has no intention to discontinue the doll, adding that “the doll gives girls a chance to express themselves and be creative.”

Impunity rules during Zimbabwe’s “transition”

HARARE, Zimbabwe (IRIN) – Earlier this month Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe was telling MPs in parliament – to loud cheers from both side of the house – that there would be “zero tolerance” of political violence, while on the steps of the building, supporters of Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) were being severely beaten by Mugabe supporters, as police stood by.

About 11 MDC supporters needed hospitalization, including MDC councillor Victor Zifodya who sustained head injuries. “The police know that ZANU-PF supporters are behind this but they appear to be afraid to arrest them,” MDC youth spokesperson Maxwell Katsande told IRIN.

Tadiwa Choto, a victim of political violence during the 2008 elections, told IRIN if ZANU-PF can engage in violence while Mugabe addresses parliament, it illustrates “either they don’t listen to him [Mugabe] any more or that he is aware of these acts of violence while saying the right things in order to please SADC [Southern African Development Community].”

The disconnect between political realities on the ground and public statements was also evident during the SADC security troika meeting in Zambia some six months ago which called for “the immediate end of violence, intimidation, hate speech, harassment and any other form of action that contradicts the letter and spirit” of the unity government – but the violence continues.

Brian Raftopoulos, a senior researcher at the Centre for Humanities Research at the University of the Western Cape, told IRIN political violence was the domain of Mugabe’s ZANU-PF and sporadic acts of violence by the MDC paled into insignificance by comparison.

“Violence has been a central electoral tool [of ZANU-PF] since 2000 [when the MDC emerged as a viable opposition to ZANU-PF rule], as it has been for most of the post-independence period. Since 2000 it has intensified,” he said.

But he said SADC was “keeping a closer-eye” on political violence and it was unlikely there would be a repeat of it in any forthcoming election, potentially as early as next year.

Violence peaked during the disputed 2008 election in which ZANU-PF lost its majority in parliament for the first time since independence, and Tsvangirai narrowly missed securing the presidential vote in the first round, amid widespread claims of vote-rigging. Tsvangirai subsequently withdrew from the second round in protest against political violence.

The MDC says about 200 people were killed, thousands injured and tens of thousands displaced during the 2008 electoral violence.

The Zimbabwe Peace Project (ZPP) said in a recent statement it was “appalled by the ongoing use of violence and brutal attacks on members of the public” and the failure of police “to respond in timely fashion and arrest all those responsible.”

The ZPP said in July 2011 it recorded 910 incidents of violence and human rights abuses.

Raftopoulos said ZANU-PF does have levels of support, but when “confronted with losing power”, as in 2008, political violence becomes “a central part of ZANU-PF’s capacity to rule”.

ZANU-PF had also become “fractious”, he said – illustrated by its desire to hold early elections, as the party had no “national figure” to replace Mugabe amid mounting reports of the 87-year-old’s deteriorating health.

Election announcement sparks violence

Mugabe’s recent announcement that elections should be held by March 2012 at the latest – although analysts say the holding of a poll could no longer be set unilaterally by Mugabe and required consensus both from the MDC and SADC – led to violence across Harare, while some members of the army went on the rampage assaulting civilians at random.

The National Constitutional Assembly (NCA), an NGO campaigning for a democratic constitution, said in a recent statement: “We note that the escalation of violence is as a result of President Mugabe’s pronouncements that elections will be held next year in March and it seems the political parties are now in campaign mood.

“The violence signals instability in our country and must be quelled before it fuels to the levels we saw before the 2008 elections… We are, however, worried about the partisanship of our police force who are only shifting the blame to the MDC while leaving those from ZANU-PF,” NCA said.

Violence is also not limited to the streets: MDC MPs and a priest were also assaulted inside parliament in June: Their attackers demanded that a parliamentary debate on the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission Bill be deferred.

Didymus Mutasa, the presidential affairs minister, said his party stood by those who attacked MDC parliamentarians inside the house, telling the media: “Is it possible for someone to just leave their homes to go and beat up people at parliament without being provoked?”

Weak SADC

SADC’s ability, beyond occasional rhetoric, to curb or end political violence in Zimbabwe was limited both by its capacity constraints, and the few enforcement mechanisms it had available, Judy Smith-Höhn, a senior researcher at the African Conflict Prevention Programme at the Pretoria-based think-tank the Institute for Security Studies, told IRIN.

Zimbabwe could be expelled from SADC, but this was unlikely as it was a founding member of the regional body; and SADC sanctions were unlikely since the organization had been campaigning for their removal since 2002, Smith-Höhn said.

The nearly decade-old targeted sanctions imposed by the US and the European Union (EU) banning travel and freezing the bank accounts of individuals and companies linked to Mugabe and his ZANU-PF party, has become politically expedient for ZANU-PF: Mugabe routinely blames economic woes and food insecurity on the sanctions, and SADC has also pitched in on Mugabe’s side.

Raftopoulos said there needed to be a “calibrated approach” to sanctions by the US and EU, who should look to reward progress with the suspension of some sanctions.

Floyd Mayweather knocks out Victor Ortiz in controversial fashion

Shawn Krest – AHN Sports Correspondent

Las Vegas, NV, United States (AHN Sports) – Floyd Mayweather knocked out Victor Ortiz in the fourth round to win the WBC Welterweight title Saturday night in Las Vegas.

The fight ended in controversy as Ortiz was deducted a point for an illegal headbutt. When the referee resumed action, Ortiz hugged Mayweather to apologize, then backed up with his hands down.

With Ortiz not mounting any type of defense, Mayweather caught him with the combination that ended the fight.

Mayweather had already built a big lead on the scorecards at the time of the stoppage. Ortiz had promised to come forward and look for the knockout, which fell right into the counter-punching Mayweather’s hands.

As the southpaw, Ortiz came forward, Mayweather caught him with right-hand leads throughout the four rounds. Ortiz had not yet found a way to avoid Mayweather’s right at the time of the stoppage.

Mayweather also displayed a clear advantage in handspeed over the younger Ortiz.

In the fourth, Mayweather stunned Ortiz with a combination early, and Ortiz charged forward with his most prolonged flurry of the night. He backed Mayweather into the ropes, although he was unable to land any solid punches through Mayweather’s guard.

While working on the ropes, Ortiz landed a headbutt to the face of Mayweather. Referee Joe Cortez called time and deducted a point from Ortiz for the illegal move.

When the fight resumed, Ortiz gave Mayweather a hug, kissed his cheek, then backed away.

Mayweather threw a left hook that stunned Ortiz, then dropped him with a straight right. Ortiz couldn’t beat the ten count, and the fight ended at 2:59 of the fourth.

Reaction to the ending was split. Mayweather received criticism for what many thought was a cheap shot. Ortiz said, “I was blindsided.”

On the other hand, Ortiz violated the first rule of boxing: Protect yourself at all times.

Afterward, referee Cortez said, “Time was in, and the fighter has to have his guard up. Mayweather did nothing wrong.”

At the post-fight press conference, Mayweather was unapologetic, saying, “(Stuff) happens in the sport of boxing. You wanted a knockout, and that’s what I gave you.”

Earlier, Mayweather had a run-in with Larry Merchant as the HBO announcer tried to do the traditional in-ring post-fight interview. Mayweather refused to speak to Merchant and told him, “HBO should fire you.”

Mayweather remained undefeated at 42-0. He recorded his 26th career knockout but first since stopping Ricky Hatton in 2007. It was his earliest knockout since a second-round stoppage of Angel Manfredy in 1998.

Mayweather regained the WBC title he won from Hatton. He vacated the title when he took a 21-month hiatus from the sport following that bout.

Ortiz took the title from Andre Berto in April of this year and was defending it for the first time. He lost for the first time since June, 2009, seven fights ago, and fell to 29-3.

On the undercard, Erik Morales won a world title in a fourth weight class, becoming the first Mexican fighter to do so.

He stopped last-minute replacement Pablo Cesar Cano on a tenth round TKO to win the vacant WBC Light Welterweight title

Morales was originally supposed to face Lucas Matthysse, but an illness forced him to withdraw less than a week before fight night.

Cano had a large cut by his left eye, and the doctors stopped the fight following the tenth round. Morales recorded his 36th knockout and improved to 52-7. Cano lost for the first time and stands at 22-1-1.

Target’s website crashes after launch of Missoni line

Diane Alter – AHN News Reporter

Minneapolis, MN, United States (AHN) – Fashion Week might want to take notes from the second largest discount retailer Target.

After Target released its Missoni line for Target Tuesday, its website crashed several times throughout the day. Hundreds of fashionistas created long lines at many Target stores for a sale of limited offerings of its Missoni for Target collection that includes bikes, luggage, clothes and housewares.

The 400-piece line, made by Italian luxury knitwear designer Missoni exclusively for Target, features its trademark zigzag patterns that sell between $2.00 for stationary to $599.99 for patio furniture. The prices for items made just for Target sell for a fraction of the designer’s originals that range between $595 to $1,500.

Target’s website crashed again early Wednesday, but was back up again by 8:30 a.m. Target apologized to its customers for the disruption.

Target had planned to sell the line into October at all 1,700 stores around the country. But the Missoni line is anticipated to sell out before that online and at all of the cheap chic retailer’s stores.

Michigan State receiver sets school record with crowd-pleasing circus catch

John Raffel – AHN Sports Correspondent

East Lansing, MI, United States (AHN Sports) – B.J. Cunningham apparently didn’t want to break Michigan State’s all-time receiving record in a nonchalant way.

When Cunningham, in Saturday’s 44-0 victory over Florida Atlantic, made his first catch of the game and the 149th of his career to establish a new Michigan State record, he was falling toward the ground and then made a circus catch to bring it in.

But with most of the other catches Cunningham has made in a record-breaking career, he was able to get the job done.

Against Florida Atlantic, he grabbed five passes for 73 yards. The previous weekend against Youngstown Ohio, the native of Westerville, Ohio, snagged nine passes for 130 yards and a touchdown

Being consistent has been the key to his record-breaking success as far as Cunningham has been concerned.

“We have a great quarterback, a great coach that helps me get the ball and put me in positions to get the ball,” Cunningham said. “I feel like I’ve been here 20 years. But I did it by being consistent. I’ve been here four years and I just stayed consistent and caught the ball.”

The record-breaker was a 7-yard reception from Cousins on the team’s opening drive for a first down.

“It was a two- man route with me and the running back,” Cunningham recalled. “I was going there and posting up and getting ready to catch the ball while the running back runs out. He kind of slid out and I just slid in behind.

“Kirk (Cousins) threw a pass and I was kind of slipping. I think I tripped over his foot and bobbled it a few times. I had to catch it. I couldn’t drop the first catch. (Teammate) Brian Linthecum was right there and he could have snatched it from me but he didn’t want to do that. That was nice of him. It was a good pass.”

Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio was impressed with the circus catch by the senior Spartan receiver. So were others.

“He is just a guy that makes plays,” Dantonio said. “You can have him covered and he is still going to make the play. That is the kind of receiver really you need out there. It is one thing to get open; it is another thing to make the play when you are not open. The ball is thrown up and it is a difficult ball to catch, and he seems to be able to make those on a consistent level.

“He is big-body receiver, he is 225-pounds and is about 6-2 so he is a big-body receiver that has great jumping ability and great timing. All of those things fit for him and make him, I would say, a dominant receiver right now.”

“He has played a lot,” said offensive coordinator Dan Roushar. “He has played now four years for us, so he has had a lot of opportunities and has done a lot of good things. One thing about him is he comes to work every day.

“You never see him change. In fact, one of the NFL scouts walked through this week and made a comment about what a phenomenal blocker he is. That speaks volumes about who he is. He tries to be the complete player. Very physical in the game, runs very good and has exceptional hands. He can go get the football and he wants the football.”

Cousins has had plenty of satisfaction throwing to Cunningham.

“I was running through my mind the possible plays or routes that final catch to break that record, and I wasn’t sure what it was going to be,” Cousins said. “I didn’t think it would be that play or in that fashion. I thought it was somewhat fitting, with the way his career is going and his talents too.”

“He has always made those acrobatic catches and that’s what separated him and made him a very special receiver. He is one of the few guys who can make a catch like that and I think it was fate that it was that one that broke the record.”

Cousins said he was confident Cunningham would come through to make the grab.

“We free-released the running back, it’s been a good play for us. The corner sat down on the running back’s release so I came inside to B.J. The linebacker did a nice job of taking away B.J., but then basically B.J. slid inside the linebacker. At that point he tripped on the linebacker and tried to slide inside of him but he was just in the process of falling. When I saw him falling down, I basically just tried to throw it to him falling down.”

In the meantime, Cunningham hopes to help the 17th-ranked Spartans repeat as Big Ten champions.

“When I first got here, it wasn’t like this. We expect to be great. We know we can be great, so that’s what we expect to be,” he said.

U.S. Open: Streaking Serena to test Wozniacki in semis; Federer to clash vs. Djokovic

Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor

Flushing Meadows, NY, United States (AHN Sports) – Top-ranked Caroline Wozniacki and three-time winner Serena Williams have set a semifinals clash Saturday after disposing of their respective quarterfinals opponents in the resumption of the 2011 U.S. Open.

On Thursday, the top-seeded Wozniacki, the 2009 U.S. Open runner-up, broke a gritty Andrea Petkovic of Germany six times before claiming a 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) triumph over her 10th-seeded German foe.

In Saturday night’s marquee semifinal bout, the Danish superstar will face a resurging Williams, who is currently riding a 17-match overall win-streak, all on hardcourts. That streak includes titles in Stanford and Toronto.

The former No. 1 Williams, owner of 13 major titles, powered her way past No. 17th Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, unleashing six aces among her 26 winners to post 7-5, 6-1 victory.

Meanwhile, second-seeded Vera Zvonareva will not make a return trip to the final here after succumbing to Australia’s Sam Stosur in straight sets.

Zvonareva, last year’s U.S. Open runner-up to Kim Clijsters, managed only nine winners compared to her ninth-seeded conqueror who posted 25 en route to a 6-3, 6-3 upset.

Stosur will face rising German Angelique Kerber in Saturday’s other semifinal.

Kerber, currently ranked 92nd, toppled 26th seeded Italian Flavia Pennetta 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in Day 11′s other match.

In the men’s draw, Swiss master Roger Federer advanced to his 29th career major semifinal Thursday after demolishing the talented French campaigner Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

The third-seeded five-time U.S. Open champ Federer eliminated the 11th-seeded Frenchman in 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 fashion to set a semifinal duel against the top-seeded Novak Djokovic.

The high-flying Djokovic improved to an incredible 62-2 this year following a 7-6 (7-2), 6-7 (3-7), 6-0, 3-0 conquest of fellow Serb Janko Tipsarevic (No. 20).

The world No. 1 Djokovic, who has already won nine titles this year, including two major victories at Wimbledon and the Australian Open, trails Federer 9-14 in their all-time matchups.

Djokovic, however, has the momentum having taken three of the four meetings this year, but one of the Serb’s two blemishes in his sterling record this year was courtesy of Federer in the semis at Roland Garros.

Meanwhile, defending champion Rafael Nadal will collide with American slugger Andy Roddick in the quarterfinal Friday after the two former No. 1s triumphed in their respective fourth-round draws Thursday.

The second-seeded Nadal finished off Gilles Muller of Luxembourg 7-6 (7-1), 6-1, 6-2 after delays because of rain early this week.

Roddick, who captured his lone major title here in Flushing back in 2003, advanced after passing a tough test by the fifth-seeded Spaniard David Ferrer, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

Fourth-seeded Andy Murray, who was the 2008 U.S. Open runner, also completed his fourth-round match Thursday, dispatching American Donald Young, 6-2, 6-3, 6-3.

Three-time Grand Slam runner-up Murray was trailing 2-1 in his duel with Young when play was called due to rains Wednesday.

Murray will next face towering American John Isner (No. 28), who posted a mild upset over Gilles Simon, outlasting the 12th-seeded Frenchman, 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-4).

Vanity sizing hits men’s pants

Diane Alter – AHN News Reporter

London, England, United Kingdom (AHN) – While many men desire to hang on to the belief that they can still wear the jeans of their youth, it simply wasn’t so, until now, thanks to new sizing.

Vanity sizing, which has been around for quite some time in ladies fashion, has now appeared in menswear. The newest trend in men’s trousers is “manity sizing,” and it has hit UK stores with a vengeance.

Research shows that the waistbands on pants sold by top fashion chains in London are far more generous than the actual measurements. The move has led not to just deception, but to no standard when it comes to sizing.

Men have been known to go to great lengths to put off purchasing pants a waist size or two larger. Some wear their pants low, with their bellies spilling over. Others have turned to control underwear, vest and pants designed to give a slimming look. High waistbands are tried by some, but the results are not pretty.

The truly bad news for men is that the skewed sizing found in four out of five British stores means more trying on of clothes and more shopping, not a favorite pastime for most men.
