Flushing Meadows, NY, United States (AHN Sports) – Rafael Nadal continued with his quest to defend his U.S. Open crown, while fourth-ranked Andy Murray rallied past Robin Haase in second-round play at the tennis event at Flushing Meadows Friday.
Second-seeded former No. 1 Nadal cruised into the third round after Frenchman Nicolas Mahut retired. The Spanish superstar was leading 6-2, 6-2, when Mahut decided to pull out, citing injury.
Up next for Nadal is 2002 Wimbledon runner-up David Nalbandian, who upended 30th- seeded Croat Ivan Ljubicic 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Fourth-seeded Murray, on the other hand, shook off tentative moments to claim a 6-7 (5-7), 2-6, 6-2, 6-0, 6-4 victory over his Dutchman opponent. Murray will play 25th-seeded Spaniard Feliciano Lopez in third round.
Fifth-seeded Spaniard David Ferrer also advanced after knocking out American James Blake in three sets, while No. 12th Gilles Simon outlasted Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 7-5, 6-3.
Donald Young and Igor Kunitsyn posted mild upsets Friday. Young toppled Stanislas Wawrinka (14), 7-6 (9-7), 3-6, 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-1), while Kunitsyn sent No. 17th- seed Jurgen Melzer packing with a 3-6, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) triumph.
No. 18th-seed Juan Martin del Potro also moved into the next stage after besting fellow Argentine Diego Junqueira, 6-2, 6-1, 7-5. Del Potro, who apparently is regaining his form after a wrist injury sidelined him for most of the 2010 campaign, ruled this event in 2009.
Meanwhile, former top-ranked Andy Roddick, seeded 21st here, eliminated fellow American Jack Sock, 6-3, 6-3, 6-4.
In women’s play, third-seeded former U.S. Open champ Maria Sharapova saw her success this summer dashed with a three-set loss to No. 26th Italian Flavia Pennetta in third-round action Friday.
The former world No. 1 Sharapova, who was the runner-up at Wimbledon earlier this summer and was coming off a title in Cincinnati last month, had some shaky moments as she succumbed to Pennetta, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
The three-time major champion Sharapova, who snagged the U.S. Open crown back in 2006, was unbeaten this year in 12 previous matches that went the distance entering Friday.
Pennetta, a two-time U.S. Open quarterfinalist, will next meet No. 13 Peng Shuai, who ousted No. 19 Julia Goerges in 6-4, 7-6 (1) fashion.
Also Friday, 2010 Wimbledon and U.S. Open runner-up Vera Zvonareva booked a fourth-round spot after trouncing No. 30 Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain 6-4, 7-5.
The second-seeded Russian, who succumbed to Kim Clijsters in last year’s final here, will be tested next by German Sabine Lisicki (No. 22), who bested American Irina Falconi in straight sets.
Ninth-seeded 2010 French Open runner-up Sam Stosur also reached the fourth round after overcoming a pesky No. 24th seed Nadia Petrova 7-6 (5), 6-7 (5), 7-5, in a three-hour battle.
