Almagro, Simon to settle Hamburg title; Zvonareva cruises into Baku final

Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor

Hamburg, Germany (AHN Sports) – Nicolas Almagro and Gilles Simon won their respective semifinal bouts Saturday to forge a final showdown at the German Tennis Championships.

The third-seeded Almagro advanced into the title match after whipping fellow Spaniard Fernando Verdasco (No. 8) in 6-4, 6-1 fashion.

No. 5 seeded Frenchman Simon, on the other hand, had to shake off a tentative start to oust fourth-seeded Russian Mikhail Youzhny, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.

Meanwhile at the Atlanta Tennis Championships, top-seed and defending champ Mardy Fish will attempt to return to the final when he tackles fellow American Ryan Harrison in the semis.

Third-seeded John Isner and Luxembourg’s Gilles Muller will square off in the other semifinal match Saturday.

In Baku, Azerbaijan, Russian star Vera Zvonareva demolished Ukrainian opponent Mariya Koryttseva in straight sets for a place in the championship of the inaugural Baku Cup.

The top-seeded Zvonareva handled Koryttseva, 6-1, 6-2 to forge an All-Russian final against Ksenia Pervak.

Pervak, seeded seventh, clawed back from a set down to defeat Kazakhstan’s Galina Voskoboeva, 1-6, 6-0, 6-2.

Sunday’s finale will mark just the second time Zvonareva and Pervak will meet, with the former taking their first encounter last year in Pattaya City.

Four Orioles sluggers belt homers in win over Indians

AHN Sports Staff

Baltimore, MD, United States (AHN Sports) – The Baltimore Orioles made it two wins in a row against the Cleveland Indians as four Birds sluggers came through with a homer each on their way to an 8-3 rout Sunday at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

The Orioles ended their regular-season series with the Indians in impressive fashion as Adam Jones, Robert Andino, Nick Markakis and Matt Wieters each homered to highlight the come-from-behind victory.

The Indians (49-44), on top of the AL-Central Standings despite the two losses, started quickly as Travis Hafner and Carlos Santana belted a solo homer each and Travis Buck added an RBI single to give their team the upper hand in the first inning.

Momentum suddenly switched in the second inning when Jones cracked a homer over the left field wall.

After two scoreless innings, the Birds took the lead on a three-run blast by Andino in the fifth inning.

The Orioles eventually broke the game open, as Markakis recorded another homer in the 6th while Andino and J.J. Hardy drove in a run each in the 7th inning.

Wieters capped the offensive onslaught on another homer in the eighth as the Orioles dealt the Indians their second straight loss (2-7 against the Indians in the season).

Hurler Mitch Atkins started on the mound for the Orioles, but his struggles prompted Birds manager Buck Showalter to replace him with Mark Hendrickson in the fourth inning.

Hendrickson went on to take the win after allowing a hit over three innings. Relief pitchers Mike Gonzalez and Jim Johnson also held the Indians without a run.

Meanwhile, Jeanmar Gomez suffered his second loss of the season after surrendering five runs and six hits over six innings.

With the win, the Orioles improved to 38-54 and will next take on AL East leader Boston Red Sox (56-36).

The Indians start their series with the Minnesota Twins with a doubleheader Monday.

Soderling, Ferrer to settle Swedish Open title; Ferrero in All-Spanish final in Stuttgart

Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor

Bastad, Sweden (AHN Sports) – Top-seeded Swedish crowd favorite Robin Soderling will make his third straight Bastad finale appearance after subduing third-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych in straight sets at the Swedish Open Saturday.

Soderling, who captured this event in 2009 and was last year’s runner-up to Nicolas Almagro, knocked out two-time Bastad finalist Berdych in 6-1, 6-0 fashion.

The world No. 5 Soderling will be aiming for his fourth title of the season against Spaniard David Ferrer, who is seeded second this week

Ferrer vanquished his fourth-seeded countryman Almagro 6-1, 6-3 to advance to the championship.

The No. 6 ranked Ferrer, who owns two titles this year, will attempt to reclaim the Bastad crown, which he won in 2007.

At the Mercedes Cup semis, unseeded former No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero prevailed over a gutsy Federico Del Bonis in straight sets to book a place in the final.

The former French Open champion Ferrero came back from a set down to oust his Argentine challenger, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Ferrero will battle Pablo Andujar in an All-Spanish finale in Stuttgart.

Andujar needed three sets in ousting Polish wild card Lukasz Kubot in the semifinal Saturday.

Meanwhile at the Palermo International tennis event, surging Slovenian Polona Hercog toppled No. 1 seed Flavia Pennetta of Italy in straight sets to set a final showdown against Anabel Medina Garrigues.

The seventh-seeded Hercog, who dominated the clay-court event in Bastad last week, thumped former Palermo champ Pennetta, 6-2, 6-2.

Pennetta ruled this event in 2009 and was last year’s runner-up to Kaia Kanepi.

Medina Garrigues, on the other hand, will be shooting for her fifth Palermo title against Hercog.

The fifth-seeded Medina Garrigues, who owns 10 career WTA titles, advanced after evicting eighth-seeded Czech Petra Cetkovska 7-5, 6-3

In Bad Gastein, Austria, Spaniard Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez and Austrian crowd favorite Patricia Mayr- Achleitner will collide at Gastein Ladies Open championship.

Martinez Sanchez advanced after trouncing Ukrainian Kateryna Bondarenko, 6-1, 7-6 (7-5), while Mayr-Achleitner completely overwhelmed eighth-seeded Russian Ksenia Pervak, 6-0, 6-0.

Earlier Saturday, Pervak, the lone seed left in the field, finished off Laura Pous Tio 6-2, 7-6 (5) in their quarterfinal matchup, which was postponed from Friday because of rain.

Bondarenko also completed her postponed quarterfinal bout with Carla Suarez Navarro 6-2, 6-1 Saturday.

Heat’s Dwyane Wade not over Finals exam ‘failure’

AHN Sports Staff

Miami, FL, United States (AHN Sports) – Basketball superstar Dwyane Wade admitted at his basketball camp Wednesday the ghost of the Miami Heat’s Finals loss to Dallas Mavericks still haunts him and added he’s not ruling out the possibility of playing overseas if the lockout persists.

For the first time since suffering his first career finals loss, Wade shared his views about the Heat’s championship collapse, the team’s future and the possibility of playing outside the NBA during the work stoppage.

“The sting is always going to be there when you lose,” Wade said at his three-day camp at Nova Southeastern University in Davie Wednesday. “It was obviously my first time ever losing a Finals.”

Wade, who came short to winning his second NBA title after capturing the first one in 2006 against the Mavs, said he still considered the 2010-2011 season a pretty good campaign for the Heat.

In the summer of 2010, Wade merged with fellow superstars Chris Bosh and LeBron James to form a power trio, whose only aim was to win the championship.

The Heat experienced ups and downs in their first regular-season together but managed to pull off a dominating postseason.

The Heat eliminated the Philadelphia Sixers, the Boston Celtics and the Chicago Bulls all in five games en route to their second ever finals appearance.

Brimming with confidence, the Heat won Game 1 of the finals in an impressive fashion. However, things fell apart in the closing minutes of Game 2.

Up 15 points with six minutes left to play, the Heat allowed the Mavs to rally back in the match and eventually stole the game at American Airlines Arena.

The Heat also missed the offensive explosiveness of LeBron James, who settled for being a distributor rather than being a human scoring machine.

Dallas used steady shooting and a solid zone defense to nab its first NBA title in franchise history.

Nevertheless, Wade believed the Heat has several chances to win a championship.

Despite the work stoppage, Wade has been keeping himself busy in several summer camps and preparing for a trip in China to endorse a shoe brand.

“I haven’t been back to China since the [2008] Olympics. I’m excited to finally go back over there and enjoy China,” Wade told the Miami Herald Wednesday.

Wade also did not rule out the chance of playing abroad especially during this uncertain time.

“One thing I can say is I’m not ruling it out,” Wade told the Miami Herald. “At the end of day, we get that itch as a basketball player. You want to play the game. I have no idea when I will get that itch. We’ve never been here before. It’s not something you wake up every day thinking about.”

Prince William displays chopper flying skills

Vittorio Hernandez – AHN News

Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada (AHN) – Britain’s newly married royal couple continued to wow Canadians during their nine-day official visit to different provinces. Prince William amazed them with his helicopter-flying skills, while Kate was admired for her fashion sense on Monday.

Crowds cheered when the Duke of Cambridge displayed a gentle landing of the Sea King on the lake as part of their Prince Edward Island visit. His other helicopter tricks include water taxiing and landing and taking off with one engine shut down.

The prince acquired his helicopter flying skills from his training at the Royal Air Force College Cranwell and the Royal Air Force where he is a member of No. 22 Squadron performing co-pilot duties on a Sea King search-and-rescue chopper.

Later the couple joined in a dragon boat race with the prince and his wife riding different vessels. Prince William’s team won the race.

Kate appropriately wore a nautical dress while visiting the Maritime province. She had a cream colored knit dress made by Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen, the same designer of her wedding gown. The dress had a necktie with an anchor and navy trim, and navy stripes around the sleeves and waistband.

The duchess also wore diamond and sapphire earnings, and blue pumps.

She later changed into a black and grey Nike windbreaker, slim navy trousers, navy-belted trenchcoat, red scarf and beiege and white deck shoes for the dragon boat rice, while William put on a checked shirt.

Kate Middleton’s Canadian couture style report

Anthony Jones – Celebrity News Service Reporter

Toronto, Canada (Celebrity News Service) – Prince William and Kate arrived in Canada and, while their North American visit is news enough, for fashion hounds it’s all about what Kate was wearing. She sported looks inspired by her visit to the region.

She boarded the Canadian Forces airbus wearing a navy blazer from Canadian designer Smythe Les Vestes over a sleeveless navy dress by Roland Mouret. She accessorized with matching Manolo Blahnik Calogera heels and a Polly Push Lock bag from Mulberry. The whole look would set you back around $4,000!

She stepped off the plane in an entirely different outfit, in a dress from a Montreal-based designer Erdem Moralioglu. The navy trend continued with the dress, which also featured navy lace overlay and sheer lace sleeves.

For her third look of the day, the Duchess of Cambridge showcased a look from one of her favorite British designers, Issa. She wore Issa’s black and white wrap dress featuring a bird print, which Kate had previously worn as far back as 2006, and paired it with sandals.

The royal couple continue their North American visit through July 10, with their visit including black tie dinners, consulate receptions, and even a day of playing polo.

The Troll Hunter ( *** )

Bill Wine – Celebrity News Service Movie Critic

United States (Celebrity News Service) – 90 minutes

In theaters July 1, 2011

Rating: PG-13, Mockumentary

The Norwegian mockumentary, The Troll Hunter, may sound like a recycled import, but this creature feature that attempts to explain the unexplainable is fun.

With elements of Jurassic Park, Ghostbusters, Cloverfield, and Paranormal Activity, it’s a merry monster movie that explores the fantastical and embraces the bizarre in matter-of-fact fashion.

But the film it most resembles and recalls is The Blair Witch Project, with so much similarly shaky, handheld camera work, terrified investigators, and ostensibly found footage, we could easily think of it as The Bear Switch Project.

The title character, a bearded woodsman named Hans, played by deadpan Norwegian comedian Otto Jespersen, agrees to allow a three-student film crew to accompany him on his rounds as he investigates a series of mysterious bear killings in the countryside. Camera and microphone at the ready, they follow him into the forest and into mountainside caves, expecting to expose him as a bear poacher, an unlicensed bear hunter, as part of a school project.

But what they soon learn is that it isn’t bears that Hans is tracking but trolls, and that the humongous, hideous beasts, who can smell and sniff out Christian blood, might have three heads, might be rabid, and might under certain conditions explode or turn to stone.

Yep, it turns out that those gigantic creatures of Scandinavian lore — predatory and simpleminded, with designs on sheep and tourists — actually exist, and a sustained government coverup has managed to keep this secret from the public. Hans actually works for the surreptitious government agency, the TSS (Troll Security Service). The paperwork aspect of his job is, after he has hunted down and killed his prey, filling out a bureaucratic Slain Troll Form.

The Troll Hunter isn’t exactly a terrifying horror flick and isn’t exactly a satirical comedy. There is legitimate suspense and there are a number of generic scares. But writer-director Andre Avredal gives his fanciful fantasy a dry, idiosyncratic charm by mixing suspense, comedy, horror, and CGI-enhanced action and by being serious-minded but light-fingered about following through on the film’s peculiar premise as it marries the scary and the silly.

The director is not coy about showing us the fabled trolls, which look like enormous Maurice Sendak creatures and have apparently been the source of many of Norway’s problems over the years that have heretofore been attributed to such other factors as global warming.

At the risk of scaring away folks who might have a legitimate interest in this quirky film in its native form, there will be an American version, as director Chris Columbus has already acquired the remake rights. Whether it will offer the goofy charm of this B-movie original remains to be seen.

A derivative but delightful exercise in supernatural absurdity, The Troll Hunter is a refreshingly comedic action-adventure mock-doc that succeeds by taking its troll, but never too seriously.

Jojo Doria – AHN Sports Contributor

Wimbledon, England, United Kingdom (AHN Sports) – Top-seeded Rafael Nadal completed a rain-suspended match Friday and avenged a previous loss to Gilles Muller to advance into the fourth round at Wimbledon, along with Serb star Novak Djokovic and former No. 1 Roger Federer.

The two-time champion Nadal, who was stunned by Muller in the second-round here in 2005, finished off the campaigner from Luxembourg 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-5), 6-0. Their third-round match was halted Friday after the super Spaniard won the first-set tiebreak.

It marked the 17th straight match won by the 10-time major champion Nadal, who will be tested next by former world No. 4 and former U.S. Open winner Juan Martin del Potro.

The 24th-seeded Argentine slugger Del Potro, who is 3-5 lifetime against the Spanish great, advanced via a 7-6 (10-8), 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 victory over Frenchman Gilles Simon (No. 15) Friday.

Day 6 also saw the second-seeded Djokovic improve to a stunning 44-1 this season by outlasting a determined Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis (No. 32), 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4.

In the fourth round, Djokovic will play Frenchman Michael Llodra (19).

Federer, on the other hand, continued his mastery over the 28th-seeded Argentine David Nalbandian with a 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 triumph.

The Swiss master, who owns a men’s record 16 major titles, including six of the last eight here at the All England Club, now improved to 11-8 against his Argentine nemesis.

Federer is slated to collide in the fourth round against 18th-seeded Russian Mikhail Youzhny, who vanquished 16th-seeded Spaniard Nicolas Almagro.

Other top-10 seeded winners in the third round were Tomas Berdych (No. 6), David Ferrer (No. 7) and Mardy Fish (No. 10).

Meanwhile, two-time reigning champ Serena Williams, who is on the mend, played her best match of the opening week and advanced into the fourth round at the All England Club Saturday along with top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki and former No. 1 Maria Sharapova.

The seventh-seeded former No. 1 Williams, who is bidding to become the first woman to win three straight Wimbledon titles since Steffi Graf from 1991-93, brushed aside Russian Maria Kirilenko (No. 26) 6-3, 6-2 in just over an hour to move into the round of 16.

The 13 career Grand Slam title owner Williams, who is trying to bounce back from a series of health issues, unloaded 32 winners and 10 aces to stretch her winning streak at All England to 17 matches.

The American superstar will be tested next by ninth-seeded former Wimbledon finalist Marion Bartoli, who toppled 21st-seeded Flavia Pennetta of Italy in Day 6 action.

Meanwhile, top-ranked Danish star Wozniacki cruised into the next stage and matched her best result at this prestigious tennis event, as she demolished 27th-seeded Aussie Jarmila Gajdosova in 6-3, 6-2 fashion.

Wozniacki, who leads the WTA with five titles so far this year, has yet to reach the quarterfinals at Wimbledon.

Wozniacki, bidding to claim her first-ever Grand Slam title, will next tackle Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova (No. 24), who upset 16th seeded Julia Goerges of Germany

Fifth-seeded Sharapova also cruised into the next round by using 20 winners in eliminating Czech Klara Zakopalova 6-2, 6-3.

Up next for the three-time major titlist Russian star will be Chinese Peng Shuai (No. 20).

Francesca Schiavone, runner-up to French Open winner Li Na after capturing the title last year at Roland Garros, became the highest casualty in Day 6, as the sixth-seeded Italian stalwart succumbed to a grueling bout against Austrian Tamira Paszek, 3-6, 6-4, 11-9.

Czech Petra Cetkovska also posted an upset Friday, when she knocked out 18th-seeded former No. 1 Ana Ivanovic, 6-2, 7-6 (7-0).

Skateboarding icon Eric Swenson commits suicide

Ayinde O. Chase – AHN News Staff

San Francisco, CA, United States (AHN) – Eric Swenson, co-founder of the skateboard magazine Thrasher, committed suicide on Monday.

The 64-year-old business man shot and killed himself outside of the Mission Police Station at about 9 a.m.

According to a witness, he walked to the front of the police station wearing a black shirt, black jeans and carrying a high caliber gun. He then sat down, put the gun in his mouth and pulled the trigger.

It’s unclear why he chose to take his life. Some friends speculate that he may have been distraught over ongoing pain from a leg injury he suffered several years ago.

Swenson co-founded Thrasher Magazine, which started in the 1980s and focused on the skateboarding culture.

He also co-founded Independent Truck Co., which manufactures skateboard trucks, the metal parts that connect the board to the wheels.

Thrasher advertising director Eben Sterling, who knew Swenson for 18 years, said Thrasher magazine, started in 1981, helped establish skateboarding as a subculture.

“Before Thrasher skateboarding was just another trend like yo-yos, rollerblades and Hula Hoops. But now it had its own music, dialect and it’s own fashion style,” Sterling said.

Swenson’s partner in the skateboarding ventures was the more outgoing Fausto Vitello, the face of the company who passed away of a heart attack five years ago.

Michael Brooke, publisher of Concrete Wave, a skateboarding magazine in Toronto, said Wednesday that Swenson was “one of the critical architects” of the revitalized art of skateboarding.

“Eric Swenson is really one of those guys who drives things forward,” Brooke said. “The funny thing about skateboarding is that a lot of times, there are a lot more followers than there are visionaries.

Swenson leaves behind his wife Linda and sister Rebekah.
