Fashion News – What’s Trendy in 2008?

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketA fashion conscious person never misses the fashion trends for the year to come. If you are already reading this article, this means that you are interested in what to wear in 2008. Do you like the fashion of the fifties? Well, you should, because it will come back in 2008 and that entire craze will be in style again. As a matter of fact, this trend of the 50s comeback has already started before 2008, so you are at least a bit familiar with the concept.

First things first: the spring summer fashion for 2008 will contain a lot of interesting models that clearly reminds us of the 50s. Baggy dresses below the knee for day wear or vaporous dresses for evening that will make the fashion in 2008. The trousers will be in fashion as well, and mini trousers may be worn as well. Capri trousers are still in style and may be worn with extra large sweaters. However, there is a trend that will mix styles, so sporty style will mix with the chic and there will be an ethno mix, which will result in some interesting combinations. The urban style will thus be a functional wardrobe with sporty details. This highly unlikely combination that comes as a surprise is like a breathe of fresh air.

The colors that are dominant for the style for 2008′s spring and summer are the grey, black, white plus yellow. This color is a problematic color that does not suit with everything, so it must be worn with great care. However, next year, dare to wear yellow and see how it looks. The prints on the dresses or blouses can be floral, but they will become more abstract and even geometric or will totally lack. So uni is back in style. The accessories will match the outfit. The oversized bags are still in style, while the super huge earrings and necklaces will compliment the overall clothing. (more…)

How to be a Successful Model If You are Not Six Feet Tall

By Anastasia Dorohova

When you think of modeling, do you picture 16 year old, waifish thin and very exotic looking girl? If so,think again. Even though the modelng business is oversaturated with the most beautiful women in the world, an average-looking person can still have a nitche within the business.

Fashion modeling is the most prestigious category of the modeling industry, because about a dozen of fashion models have actually achieved the status of celebrities.Fashion modeling industry is not open to everyone and has very strict standards: height, weight, age and measurement requirements. Fashion models have to stay very thin to fit the clothes they are modeling, and even though many people in the industry might deny it, the pressure to have zero body fat is enormous in the fashion world. If you are tall and thin and lucky enough to have an agent who’d send you to castings (meetings with clients or photographers who can potentially hire you,) be prepared to do about six meetings a day, which wouldn’t necessarily result in any jobs.

If you are lucky enough to actually get a modeling job, most editorial projects (such as magazines) don’t pay a lot, and it takes an average fashion model a few years to build up her portfolio to start getting big fashion campaigns and other high-paying modeling gigs. (more…)

Pressed for Press

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketEvery designer wants press. It’s exciting. I remember when I saw my first client’s editorial in Lucky Magazine. So exciting…and ironically it was of a bathing suit she happened to name after me. However, even though it was a pretty big picture with her name and website as big as day, I don’t remember an influx of orders after that publication hit. Or really a difference at all.

Hmmm….what happened? Lucky is read by thousands and thousands of potential customers but it seemed like only about 5 had even taken notice. One of which was the designers mother….but I digress.
So it made me wonder. Press is really great…but at the end of the day what does a feature in Elle or a product mention in Marie Claire really mean?
Financially that is….?

Over the years I’ve learned that editorial mentions don’t necessarily equal cash dividends. You have to make them work, and a big part of that work happens long before the magazine even hits the newsstand.
Here are a few tips on making editorial mentions work for you…..
Build Customer Relationships….

If you’re a designer instead of giving editorial credit to your website, why not give your biggest selling retailer a call.
Tell them you’d like to use their name or website address to send customers to their stores from an upcoming editorial piece. They’ll be thrilled!! (more…)

The ‘No Brand’ Brand

By Mac Oosthuizen

Branding is ‘the’ buzzword of the 21st Century. It is the consumer’s bible by which we live by to distinguish what is ‘right’ about certain products and services and what is ‘wrong’. Branding is there to create a connection with our inner selves, and just as we as humans are infinitely varied and different, so too are the brands that we are exposed to. Yet what if you turned your back on brands, or at least say you have. If a brand is a corporate identity, are you not in effect turning your back on identifying yourself to the general public? With the debut opening of the first Muji store in the New York Time Building at the end of the year I think it’s a fitting time to introduce the American public to the consumer antithesis, the ‘no brand’ brand.

A lady, sitting next to Raymond Loewy (many call him the father of Industrial Design) at dinner, struck up a conversation.
‘Why’, she asked ‘did you put two Xs in Exxon?’
‘Why ask?’ he asked
‘Because’, she said, ‘I couldn’t help noticing?’
‘Well’, he responded, ‘that’s the answer.’

If there was ever a quote best expressing the brand that is Muji, this would be it. Yes I called Muji a brand so before you double take and make sure your reading the same article let me tell you a bit about Muji. (more…)

Harajuku girl, used to identify girls who gather in Harajuku district, Tokyo, Japan. Their costumes is in several different styles of clothing that originated in the culture of Japan’s major cities.

The term is not only monopolized by those who gather in the district themselves, but has become a relatively popular expression in the United States. Popular use originated from the American singer Gwen Stefani’s 2004 Love.Angel.Music.Baby album, which brought attention to Stefani’s entourage of four supposed “Harajuku Girls” who were hired to portray the look, three of whom are Japanese and one of whom is Japanese American. These “Harajuku Girls” are not in fact the fashion aficionados or the home sewing hobbyists from whence they derive their name.

Harajuku is a popular iconic placed in the world of entertainment, inside and outside of Japan. It was said that the girls of Harajuku are “beauty stars of Japan”. The American singer Gwen Stefani puts Harajuku reference in several of her songs and incorporated four female dancers, appointed under the name of “love,” “angel,” “music,” and “baby,” dressed like girls with Americanised Harajuku, as her background act. What is Fashion Trend?

Trend is the lead in which something new evolving, mostly leaning, penchant and line of growth. Hence, fashion trend is the latest evolvement of the fashion industry.

Tshirts Becoming Hot in India

by Gaurav Doshi

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketThe Cool ‘n’ Trendy T-shirts becoming hot in India Wearing Tees: It is all about your personality and attitude

T-shirts are those simple, comfy cotton casuals, an influence of the West, which blends easily with Indian style of dressing. T-shirt, if the funny name makes you wonder, here is the history. The name apparently is credited to its simple design. Indian Tennis player Sania Mirza wears T-shirt bearing the words like “Well-behaved women rarely make history”, “Attitude Unlimited” and many more. Today she is facing a tough time in answering the questions from the media related to skin tight T-shirt she wears. Indeed a hot issue of cool T-shirt!

Everyone believes that what you dress or wear says a lot about your personality. It displays your character and behavior. Sometimes T-shirts gives a perfect attitude of a person when displaying some slogans or logos and it also displays the community or religion you belong to or association / group associated with it, hence it leads to intelligent conversation or displays what you want to speak about. That means it convey your messages in the form of slogan or logo and ultimately your attitude!

Normally, teens prefer short sleeves T-shirt with attitude slogans. Many young people prefers T-shirts with attitude slogans like “God bless everyone”,” Bad attitude”, “I am on summer holiday”, ” Flower Friend”, , “I have an attitude!”, etc. If you care about the animals show it with “Animal’s friend”, if you care about environment wear T-shirt with slogans like “Think Green”, “Protect Earth from Pollution” and the possibility of playing around with words, designing and wearing it on you is immense. And all it depends on what you want to show and what you are wearing that ultimately describe your attitude. (more…)

Kate Moss Street Cred!

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Vogue Magazine published an article about Kate Moss’ American Launch of her clothing line. The article is pretty much a description of the party and her famous friends, including Moss infamous transparent dress (which is on sale for $470, including the belt). However, there was a quotation from Barneys’ Cult Creative Director, Simon Doonan that caught my attention:

“It’s very simple – celebs try to do fashion but it doesn’t mean much, whereas Kate has fashion cred in bucketfuls. Basically I’m in heaven – as a Brit I understand the majesty of TopShop. It’s edgy and it’s democratic.”

What is interesting about this collection is that unlike Madonna, Sarah Jessica Parker, Gwen Stefani and other celebrities who are known as singers or actresses; Moss, has an established reputation as model and direct exposure to the industry (she was discovered at the age of 14). Making her more of a fashion authority than other celebrity designers. (more…)
