London, England, United Kingdom (AHN) – The British Fashion Council honored Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen as Designer of the Year for 2011 at the British Fashion Awards.

Burton, who drew praise for designing Kate Middleton’s much-detailed wedding dress, has “allowed McQueen’s legacy to live while still giving her own twist of creative genius to a collection that has outshone its rivals on and off the catwalk,” the council said.

Victoria Beckham won for best brand. Alexa Chung, dressed in a sparkling beaded Christopher Kane dress, took home the Style Icon award for the second year.

Celebrity favorite Stella McCartney picked up the Red Carpet award in recognition of the “quality of her designs worn on the red carpet.”

Held Monday at London’s Savoy Hotel, A-listers mingling and looking glam included model Kate Moss and actor Colin Firth.
