Macy’s The Latest Retailer To Collaborate With Upscale Fashion Designers

Stephanie Sims – AHN Entertainment Reporter

New York, NY, United States (AHN) – Mixing the high-end with the low-priced is the trend right now. After Target, H&M and Gap experienced success with high-end designer collaborations, Macy’s is trying it on for size.

Macy’s announced on Oct. 21 that it will stock a series of limited-edition designer collections starting in Feb. 2011. Each collection will be available for about two months.

Macy’s first collaboration collection will feature Kinder Aggugini, an up-and-coming designer from London. Though he’s a bit unknown in the U.S., his clothes are sold at a few boutiques stateside, including If in New York and Ikram in Chicago.

The Kinder Aggugini collection will be available at 250 Macy’s locations in the Macy’s Impulse departments – geared toward younger men and women consumers – and pieces will vary in price from $50 to $300. Aggugini’s first collection will include silk draped dresses and leather military jackets to make everyone hopeful for spring weather.

“This customer loves to shop,” Jeff Gennette, chief merchandising officer of Macy’s, told the New York Times. “She wants to be in our store all the time, and we’d better be interesting.”

Is Macy’s looking to increase its sales after the holiday spending binge they’re hopeful shoppers will have? Possibly. BusinessWeek recently featured the retailer as localizing its selections for merchandise and catering to each city’s customer wants and needs. For example, there is great demand for women’s size 11 shoes in Chicago, and in Long Island, 1960s coffee percolators are in such demand, they sell more in the Long Island Macy’s than anywhere else in the country.

However, BusinessWeek reported almost the exact same story – Macy’s localizing their products and catering to each store location’s local market – last year around the same time.

Hopefully the new collaborations will boost business for Macy’s.

Naomi Campbell Doesn’t Want To Be Called A Role Model

Stephanie Sims – AHN Entertainment Reporter

London, England, United Kingdom (AHN) – Naomi Campbell is no role model.

No really, she said herself she doesn’t want to called one.

She recently told Interview magazine that she’s made many mistakes – which the public is aware of because she is famous – and she doesn’t even like to sound like a role model sometimes.

“I’m not a perfect human being. I have to learn from my mistakes. And…I always get nervous when people speak about something that sounds like a role model, because I don’t know if I’ve been a great role model myself. I don’t think I have in certain aspects of my life . . . But I’m trying to do better.”

Most recently, the supermodel faced scrutiny after allegedly accepting a blood diamond gift. Before this, she was brought to court and plead guilty when her maid sued her for assault. But the supermodel said she doesn’t let negative press affect her.

“I don’t get depressed. When I feel an attack, I withdraw. I disappear, I replenish, and then I come back,” she told Interview. “I’m not going to wallow in self-pity and not live my life. There are always going to be some falls in life for everybody, no matter what career you have. You have to roll with the punches and keep going.”

Her positive outlook is no doubt something she learned after being in the modeling industry for 25 years. Campbell even told Vogue.com that she felt healthier at 40 years old than when she started out in the industry. She celebrated 25 years of her modeling career at Dolce & Gabbana’s Bond Street store during London Fashion Week.

“My whole diet is different,” she said. “I feel that my thoughts are clearer now.”

Forever Autumn: The Rise Of Feminine Minimalism In Women’s Fashion

The fashion world is a strange place. Weeks before many of us have bought what we imagine we’ll be wearing for the summer wardrobe, the projections for autumn 2010 are already out from the oracle of the high street fashion directors, a move prompting this article – well, what else is there to do when the moguls are so loose-lipped? A few months back we did an article running parallel with the opening weeks of London Fashion Week on feminine minimalism – a leading style that seemed to have been jostled out of the pecking order by the more spring and summer relevant Global Traveller look, though the former had been set to be the darling of women’s fashion 2010. That remains to be seen; it has simply taken another season for those ideas to come to fashion fruition. Autumn 2010 is set to see the emergence of the high street interpretation of this new angular and stripped-down look, with major outlets openly linking themselves to the Phoebe Philo-inspired doctrine. So it sounds a little theoretical, but what does feminine minimalism entail, or, how do we wear it? At this early stage, the focus seems to be on two things; plain structural shape and clean lines throughout. Tunic-like tops and dresses are a favourite so far, with a contrasting colour for the fitted trousers or angular skirt for the bottoms. We’re talking camel coats, most definitely, and reports from the Guardian are championing the sheepskin jacket as possibly the most integral variant. For trousers, there’s a reported amount of re-jigging of shapes and cuts in the high street brands, each looking for a way to encapsulate the minimalist reliance upon silhouette in the best degree. Kick flares and boot cut trousers with severe creases are likely to go down well with this look. For colour we’re talking a glaucous palette range of bluish greys, café latte browns and as little ornamentation as possible. It seems altogether quite predictable that a swing in the opposite direction from colour prints and floral mayhem would somehow ensue, but there is a serious fashion intent behind the high street incarnation of feminine minimalism. Though a term coined by some of the biggest designer names in the fashion world, it is still a malleable idea, and we are likely to see the high street taking considerable risks in inventing the look over again in order to secure individuality. If you’re hunting down the components of this look as we speak, keep an eye out for almost clinically-pure dresses, with ornamentation only in the form of winged or flange detailing; tan shoes are a must for one of no more than three core colours. With coats and jackets think structure, clean lines, and rather brutally-plain materials, for a boxy kind of feel.

Ex-”Friends” Star Matt LeBlanc Wants To Leave Joey Behind

Anne Lu – AHN Entertainment Contributor

London, United Kingdom (AHN) – Matt LeBlanc wants to leave Joey behind. The former “Friends” star has apparently made it clear that he wants nothing to do with the character that made him famous.

According to U.K. paper The Mirror’s 3am, they bumped into the TV star at the London Fashion Week party at Maddox on Tuesday when Matt gave them a stern lecture about calling him his character name.

Matt reportedly clumsily knocked into their table, prompting them to ask: “You all right, Joey? How you doin’?” referring to his character’s famous pick-up line on the show.

But the actor replied: “I’m not Joey. Don’t you dare call me Joey. The papers say I’m finished, so don’t call me f****** Joey. I want to leave that all behind. I’m moving on.”

When the paper insisted on calling him Joey, explaining that everyone knows him as such, Matt yelled: “I’m not Joey. For the last time. I’m not f****** Joey. It’s Matt. Matt LeBlanc. Joey’s in the past. I’m trying to do something new.”

He said he is doing comedy and working with the “Friends” producers to do comedy in England, adding, “And it’s got nothing to do with Joey before you ask.”

The NBC series was a huge ratings hit during its 10-year run from 1994 to 2004. Matt reprised his role as Joey in the spin-off sitcom “Joey,” but it was canceled after two seasons.
